Kick back with wine and a movie

Who wants to drink wine, watch movies, see good dancing and attend a crazy food contest? OK everybody, here we go. All these fun activities are available this weekend in or around Austin. Oh, and who could forget more pancakes?

1.) Sipping pleasure

Let’s start with wine. The Think Spring Wine Tasting event will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Lansing Corners on Highway 218 just north of Austin. Tickets are $15 per person and available at Apollo Liquor.

2.) Righteous movies

By movies I do mean more than one. The Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, is again showcasing films for the Human Rights Film Festival. Friday opens with “Precious Knowledge” at 7 p.m.. Can’t make that showing? Try “Despicable Me” at 2 p.m. on Saturday or “Out in Silence” at 7 p.m. The showings are free.

3.) If they want to dance…

Friday is even more packed with a dancing showcase at Riverland Community College’s Frank W. Bridges Theatre, 1900 Eighth Ave. NW. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., features current and former Riverland talent and is $8 for admission or free for students. The show is appropriate for all ages.

4.) Smooth moves

Dance enthusiasts may enjoy this next event, as well. Riverside Arena, 501 Second Ave. NE, is hosting the Riverside Figure Skating Club’s annual ice show with local guest skaters at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and 5 and younger get in free. It should be a slick show.

5.) Forever flapjacks, perpetual pancakes

Yes, Austin, another pancake breakfast will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Queen of Angels Church’s Cunningham Hall inside the building at 1001 Oakland Ave. E. The feed is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Pacelli Catholic Elementary School.

Look to Reporter Matt Peterson’s column every Friday for more about upcoming events in Austin. For even more, check out the calendar on Page 4 every day in the print edition and at austindailyherald.com.
