Red Cross volunteers receive awards

The focus of the Red Cross often on the response to disasters like Hurricane Isaac, but the group still had time to recognize local volunteers earlier this year.

The Red Cross is well known for its disaster preparedness and for providing assistance when and where help is needed. Many volunteers serve year-round locally.

In June, the Red Cross recognized three local volunteers who have provided outstanding leadership and service in Mower County.

Georgia Larkin received the Eileen Nierengarten Volunteer Achievement Award, which was created to honor Eileen for her 50 years of exemplary service to the Mower County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The recipient must demonstrate long-term service. Larkin has given more than 40 years of service to the American Red Cross and continually demonstrates her commitment to the mission of the Red Cross, according to a news release.

Deedee Marx was chosen as 2012 Volunteer of the Year. She has hundreds of hours of service in many areas including disaster services, health and safety instruction, special events, and in the chapter office. Marx is the disaster services chair and provides leadership for the chapter’s planning and preparedness for a disaster as well as disaster response. She also oversees the chapter’s disaster preparedness education for the residents of Mower and Freeborn Counties.

Mark Nibaur was recognized as the 2012 Board Member of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the chapter. He brought great leadership and perspective to the Mower County Chapter board as it merged with the Freeborn Chapter. He is serving as chair for the Freeborn–Mower Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mark also helped with financial development, marketing and building and grounds committees.
