On Tuesday, March 27, Pacelli Catholic Schools participated in the regional History Day competition held at Winona State University.

Of the nine who participated, six were chosen to move on to the State History Day competition. The submissions chosen to move on included two websites and a documentary.

Sponsored by the Minnesota Historical Society and the University of Minnesota, History Day is an opportunity for students at Pacelli to apply their skills and interests in their own unique ways.

In addition to being able to research nearly any topic they wish, students can choose to show their work through either a website, documentary, essay, exhibit or performance.

This kind of freedom helps students appreciate the value of time management, communication, teamwork and planning. It is also an opportunity for students to improve their academic and social confidence, as well as their critical thinking skills.

Held at the University of Minnesota on April 28, the statewide History Day competition will give these Pacelli students the opportunity to show off their hard work. The top students in the state will then be able to participate in the National History Day competition held in Washington, D.C. later this year.

Pacelli students who qualified for and participated in regionals are:

Melany Rosas Hernandez, “Roe v. Wade;” Richana Stone and Shelby Jenkins, “Minnesota in the Civil War,” state qualifier; Rory Bickler, “Striking a Match: Clara Lemlich and the Uprising of the 20,000,” a state qualifier; Allison Srp and Caitlin Drees, “Crimean War;” and Axel Aguilar, Ervin Noyola, and Luis Hernandez, “U.S.A. and Japan,” a state qualifier.
