The Packers showed some fight in the second game of a baseball doubleheader, but they couldn’t close the deal as the Huskies walked away with a sweep by scores of 15-3 and 7-6 at Riverland Complex Tuesday.

Owatonna (6-4 overall, 6-2 Big Nine) took the lead for good in the nightcap in the sixth inning when Tyler Smith drilled a one-out triple and scored on an Austin error.

The Packers (1-9 overall, 0-8 Big Nine) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Mike Tindal popped out and Brady Klingfus grounded out.

Austin also left runners on second and third in the fifth when they failed to score from third on a groundout by Quinn Yocom and Alex Earl struck out to end the frame.

“We continue to have trouble coming up with that clutch hit. We kept coming up with nothing and you can’t do that against a good team,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said. “The good thing is we were out here competing and it was a good ball game (in the second game).”

Austin tied the game at six in the bottom of the fifth when Joey Swatfager drilled a triple to center field to score a run and he scored on a bloop single by Mike Tindal.

“I see lefty’s pretty well and I wanted to get at least one big hit,” Swatfager said of his triple.

Austin fell behind 4-0 in the top of the third, but the Packers tied the game in the bottom of the third when Jay Ettinger and Preston Higbe had RBI-singles and Tindal and Klingfus drew run scoring walks. Austin had the bases loaded with one out in that frame when Jacob Hines hit into a double play.

The Huskies came out swinging in the opener as they sent 12 hitters to the plate in the second inning en route to scoring eight times. Sheridan Skala had a two-run triple and Mike Sebring had a two-run single in that frame.

Nate Paris knocked in two runs with a double in the fourth inning.
