Law enforcement investigating shots fired in SE Austin

Law enforcement is looking for information after a report of shots fired Thursday night.

According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, Austin police and Mower County deputies responded to a call of shots fired at about 11 p.m. on Thursday in the 900 block of Ninth Avenue Southeast. Officers located shell casings belonging to separate calibers of ammunition in the street. A vehicle was located that had damage consistent with damage caused by bullets. Police also spoke to several witnesses who heard gunshots.

No injuries were reported.

During the investigation, police stopped a vehicle and cited the driver, Bakign Nyikew, 21, of Austin for driving after revocation. A passenger, Amane Ojulu Cham, 18, of Austin was arrested on a probation violation and cited for minor consumption of alcohol. Another passenger, a 16-year-old female from Rochester, was also cited for minor consumption of alcohol.

The case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made related to the shots fired. Law enforcement is asking anyone in the area who might have surveillance footage, property damage, or who may have information to contact the Mower County Law Enforcement Center at 507-437-9400.
