The Austin Blue Sox are still trying to get in a groove as they threw four different pitchers in a 13-5 loss in seven innings to the Onalaska A’s in Austin’s home opener in Marcusen Park Sunday.

The A’s racked up four hits and took advantage of two Blue Sox errors in the second inning to score eight runs and go up 11-0.

Austin (1-1 overall) scored three times on wild pitches to get within 12-4.

The Blue Sox started Brandon Hesser, and also gave Joe Huffman, Nels Nelson, and Duell Higbe work on the mound. Nelson struck out two in two perfect innings and Higbe allowed just one walk in an inning of work.

Austin also threw all of its pitchers in a 6-2 win over the Rochester Roadrunners Wednesday night.

“Today we wanted to stretch them out a little bit more,” Blue Sox manager Josh Kunze said. “It was kind of hard to judge performance because of the score and we’ve got to pick up the ball behind him. I actually thought Brandon Hesser did a good job of getting ground balls and pop ups, we just couldn’t handle it for him.”

The Blue Sox had just three hits and committed four errors on the day as they are still getting warmed up from a winter away from baseball.

“We don’t usually start this early, so everything we’re doing right now is a bonus,” Kunze said. “Everybody’s getting their reps and we’re not really concerned about what happened today.”

Joe Kroc and Tyler Nelson, a Hayfield junior, both doubled for the Blue Sox. It was Nelson’s first career hit for Austin.

“We’ve got a nice group of young guys from around the area,” Kunze said. “They’ll get their chance to play a lot, and hopefully in time that helps us out with depth.”
