Jeremy Reid Johnson, 50, of Austin was sentenced on Friday in Mower County District Court to 45 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Charges of felony terroristic threats and felony false imprisonment were dismissed as part of a plea agreement on Aug. 13.

Judge Christa M. Daily issued the sentence.

Johnson was arrested on Nov. 15, 2017, at Jim’s Supervalu after coming up behind a 17-year-old cashier and holding a pair of scissors to her throat and chest area. Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger said multiple witnesses called the police and reported the situation.

Law enforcement agents established a perimeter and ordered Johnson to let her go. The cashier was eventually able to get away from Johnson and ran to the back of the store. Officers arrested Johnson and retrieved the scissors he held to the cashier’s throat.

Johnson told officers he had ingested plant food, a type of synthetic drug, before the incident, according to Krueger.

A review of Johnson’s criminal history shows prior convictions for assault, criminal damage, terroristic threats, making obscene or harassing phone calls and check forgery.

In addition to the sentence, Johnson must also pay $85 in fines.
