The Austin wrestling team had a quick night in its home opener as it racked up four pins and five forfeits to beat Winona (1-2 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) 54-24 in Ove Berven Gym Thursday.

Freshman Zach Smith picked up a first period pin for the Packers (4-3 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) at 126 pounds and Lathan Wilson picked up a first period at 138 pounds as both young wrestlers stepped up.

“The guys who got pins did a really good job of pushing the pace,” Austin head coach Jer Osgood said. “We’re really happy with Zach Smith and Lathan Wilson going out there and wrestling tough under the lights.”

Austin senior Phillip Zynda looked to be in full strength after last year’s injury. Zynda came out aggressive at 195 pounds and pinned Lance Thorn just 41 seconds into his match.

“It felt really good, especially after being out last year,” Zynda said. “It was good to be back out here. The quicker [I go the pin] the better, to be honest.”

Austin senior Eli Marks put the finishing touches on the win when he jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before pinning Zander Rusert half-way through the second period.

“I was psyched to wrestle here tonight,” Marks said. “I was waiting for him to make a mistake and that’s what the last match is all about.”

It is the 25th year in a row the Packers have beaten Winona.
