Austin City Council declares ‘Attendance Awareness Month’; Councilmembers also recognize youth soccer

The Austin City Council chamber was packed with kids and their parents on Monday evening as the Council recognized the Austin Youth Soccer Association’s U-13, U-14 and U-16 teams during its regular meeting.

During a recent state tournament, the U-13 team won the state championship. The U-14 and U-16 teams placed second in the state tournament.

The City Council also proclaimed September as “Attendance Awareness Month.”

In the proclamation, Mayor Tom Stiehm stated, “Good attendance is essential to student achievement and graduation, and we are committed to dedicating our resources and attention to reducing chronic absenteeism rates.”

Jennifer Lawhead, executive director of Austin Aspires, addressed the Council regarding Austin Aspires joining nationwide effort to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month. You can read more about Attendance Awareness Month on page 4.

The Council unanimously voted in favor of approving the 2018 Hormel Foundation grant requests and approving a grant agreement with the State of Minnesota for the Toward Zero Death’s campaign that would fund overtime for police cracking down on DWI enforcement.

The Council also approved a development agreement with Fox Pointe Townhomes, LLC.
