“Circuital” is a fitting album to open summer.

Indie rockers My Morning Jacket’s fifth studio album is a mellow jump start to the summer music season.

The album mixes indie rock with hints of folk rock and doses of the dreamy courtesy of backing vocals and keyboards, especially on songs like “The Day is Coming.”

One of the high points is the song “Circuital,” which starts sounding like Fleet Foxes before blossoming into multi-guitar driven rock.

The song touches on folk rock with a rolling piano and, like the Fleet Foxes, touches on topics of past youth: “I am growing older day by day / still going back to my childhood way.”

Ambient keyboards and guitars infuse a unique sound to the album, especially on “Outta My System,” but the sound remains tidy.

“Holdin’ On To Black Metal” is an anthem that sounds a bit like the Flaming Lips and is the most lush song on the album. Plus it features lyrics like “Oh black metal, so misunderstood / Don’t turn yourself into Lucifer’s fool.”

Still, My Morning Jacket wields an equally powerful approach with “Slow Slow Tune,” which is likely written for singer Jim James’ child. The song is a sparse, dragging lullaby that hearkens to “Crimson and Clover.”

“Slow Slow Tune” is one of the many poignant moments the band produces on “Circuital,” but they’re unable to sustain the sound through the entire album.
