The Austin City Council is scheduled to award bids for the exterior pavement and landscaping outside of the new Spam Museum at 101 Third Ave. NE.

The council will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the city council chambers at Austin City Hall.

The Spam Museum, which will open April 22, will have a concrete sidewalk, benches, bike racks, trash bins, seating and gathering spaces. Landscaping will include mulch, trees, bushes, grass and flowers.

The re-opening of the 14,000-square-foot museum comes about a year after Hormel broke ground on April 21, 2015, on the new Spam Museum downtown on the east side of North Main Street.

Mayor Tom Stiehm is expected to proclaim three events for Austin, including Literacy Week during the week of April 4, Arbor Day as Friday on April 29 and Taste of Nations Weekend for April 29 and 30.

In a work session to follow the regular meeting, the council will discuss property tax assessment with county commissioners Joy Kanne and Craig Oscarson. For people who live in Mower County, this could change the way their properties are assessed for taxes.
