Best Bets: Concerts, candies and cookies

Cookies are all the rage this time of year, and what better way to stock up than to head to the holiday bake sale. This weekend, get ready to eat some baked goods, watch a holiday movie or two, see a winter concert, and enjoy the arts as Austin gears up for Christmas.

1. A Special holiday movie

7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Historic Paramount Theatre

2. Holiday bake sale

8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Mower County Senior Center

‘Tis the season for guests to drop by, family and friends to hang out, and to attend or host parties. This year, leave the baking to the Senior Center, which will be having a bake sale featuring cookies, candies and more to take home. For more information, call 507-433-2370.

3. Jack’s holiday social

1 to 2:30 p.m., Friday, Mower County Senior Center

Chef Jack will be serve appetizers and beverages, selling his cookbooks and recipe booklets at the Mower County Senior Center. There will be drawings and prizes and holiday cheer. All profits will go to the Senior Center. For more information, call 507-433-2370.

4. Reading at the bank

6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Austin ArtWorks Center

Lisa Soland, playwright and children’s author, will read from her new book, “The Unmade Moose.” For more information, call 507-434-0934.

5. Nativity open house

1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, 606 Oakland Pl NE, Austin

Families are invited to see the collection of more than 850 nativity scenes displayed in and around this private home. A $1 donation for the Salvation Army is requested. For more information, call 507-433-2643.

6. VFW Winter Concert Series

7 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Austin VFW

The Starlight Lounge Band, featuring former Austin residents, will play with the Austin High School jazz band starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be a freewill donation for the Austin High School jazz band. 7. ‘Peter Pan’

5 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Austin High School Knowlton Auditorium

Go on an adventure to Neverland. The performance is presented by Bridget’s Dance Conservatory, with students ages 3 to 18. Admission is $10. For more information, call 507-279-4793.
