After getting a taste of a youth football camp in Austin last year, former Viking cornerback Carl Lee is coming back.

Lee will be part of an Austin Youth football camp that is for players in grades K-12 at Wescott Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. Lee is returning to Austin to teach kids the fundamentals of the game in a non-contact camp.

“I got excited about doing it again. Once you get out there and get between the lines, you go back to being a player or a coach again. It’s great opportunity to go out there and coach some kids and have fun with it,” Lee said. “When you get kids around you and you get in the element, I don’t know if it matters if you’re on the field or on the street, it’s just about having the opportunity to be there.”

Lee was a three-time All-Pro for the Vikings and he played with Minnesota from 1983 to 1993. He finished his career with 771 tackles and 31 interceptions. Lee said he will try and talk to as many kids as he can during the camp, which will also feature Anthony Bass, who played 17 games for the Vikings in 1998-1999.

Bass is from the same high school as Lee and he actually attended one of Lee’s camps as a youth.

The camp will have plenty of Austin flavor as Dick Lees, Al Eckmann, and the AHS football coaching staff and some varsity football players will be on hand.

“The community response has been outstanding. It’s been a fantastic outpouring from the entire community,” said Brandon Lawhead, a friend of Lee’s. “We’re going to have an A list group of instructors. It’s going to be a real first rate production.”

Last year’s camp, which was held in Ellis Middle School in December, drew at least 100 participants and the numbers are expected to be high again this year. Lee said he never heard any complaints last year and all of the feedback was positive.

“The big thing about the camp last year is we did get a positive response, a lot of kids had a good time and a lot of parents were satisfied,” Lee said.
