Best Bets: Walks, hogs, carnivals and more

School has started, but that doesn’t mean summer fun has ended just yet. There’s plenty to see and do this weekend, from a walk or two Saturday and Sunday to a carnival and a big, big pig show at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

1. 5K Our Way

9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Hormel Corporate North Office.

Ready to run for a good cause? The Women’s Leadership Initiative, which helps children in the area, is getting a 5K fundraiser hosted just for them this weekend. There’s a race as well as a fun run/walk, with all proceeds going to the WLI. Entry fee is $20 for adults, $18 for children under 12, and $50 max per family. 2. National Barrow Show

Sept. 6-10, Mower County Fairgrounds

The 68th annual National Barrow Show is set to start Saturday, when all the little piggies will come straight to the Mower County Fairgrounds. Stop on out for a good time.

3. Funfest

10:30-4 p.m., Sunday, Sterling Shopping Mall parking lot.

The 14th annual Funfest is back. There’s going to be a carnival set up in southwest Austin at the Sterling Shopping Mall Sunday morning and afternoon. Activities include giant inflatables, a climbing wall, snow cones and a catered lunch by Hy-Vee.

4. Mower County Humane Society Walk-A-Thon

1-3 p.m. Sunday, Shirley Theel Memorial Park, 400 25th St. SW.

The Mower County Humane Society’s favorite active fundraiser is getting a new location this year, due to construction at Mill Pond. Participants can bring their favorite walking buddies — dogs, cats, etc. — down along with any pledges they’ve collected. Registration begins at1 p.m., the walk begins at 2 p.m.
