The top-seeded Rebels (17-4 overall) will play another elimination game Monday at 5 p.m. in Riverland.

LP (14-6 overall) had five errors in the loss to Southland, which came right after they lost a late lead in a 4-3 loss to Randolph.

“On Thursday we had such a high, then we had a such a low [today],” LP head coach Brock Meyer said. “That’s why you’ve got to stay on an even keel. If you put five errors up against Southland, you’re not going to win. It was devastating for them, but they’re still so young and this is the first time they’ve been this far. Hopefully this teaches them something.”

Taylar Schwartz pitched in the win for Southland as he allowed just five hits and Lukas Anderson was four-for-four with a double and five RBIs. Southland mustered just four hits in a 2-1 loss to Kenyon-Wanamingo to start the day.

“That first game the bats weren’t going, the second game should help us out. It’s always good to end on a better note,” Anderson said. “I think we have confidence that we can [play well in the elimination round]. We’ve been here before. We know what we have to do, we just have to hit well and that will keep us in games.”

Southland lost its first baseman Jordan Heimer when he injured his knee during an at-bat in the fourth inning in the loss to KW. Heimer was down in pain for awhile and he is not likely to return to the lineup this seson.

“He’s one of our pitchers, he’s a pretty good anchor at first base and our No. 4 batter,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “It’ll hurt us some. It takes a bat out of our lineup and right now we’re not scoring the most runs in the world.”

Both teams had chances to get the to Subsection 1A West title game, but came up short.

LP had a 3-2 lead against Randolph in the seventh inning when the Rockets came up with two of their four hits in the game to score a walk-off win on an RBI single by Kody Pirkl.

The Athletics had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Corey Retterath singled in a run with two outs.

The Rebels had just four hits in their loss to KW. They stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and left a runner on third in the seventh.

Schwartz hit a two-out triple to the left field wall with two outs in the seventh inning, but it didn’t carry far enough to tie the game.

“Taylar Schwartz was five feet from tying the game up,” Retterath said. “We actually hit the ball better than they did, we just didn’t do a couple of things in the field or at the plate that we needed to do. That’s the difference in that ball game.”
