HAYFIELD —Goodhue was able to hold Hayfield senior Cole Kruger in check, but it wasn’t enough as some of Hayfield’s other players stepped up as the Vikings one 47-30 in their boys basketball home opener in Hayfield Friday.

Jeremy Stuart scored 16 points, Carter Pesch added nine points and Drew Streightiff scored eight for the Vikings (3-0 overall, 3-0 HVL) as Kruger was limited to five points to go with his five rebounds and four assists.

“It feels good to know than everyone can score points and we can still win games when they’re guarding Cole with the box and one defense,” said Hayfield center Merrick Ducharme, who finished with six points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two assists.

The Vikings started the game on an 8-0 run and Goodhue never got closer than four the rest of the way. Hayfield led by double digits throughout most of the second half.

“They concentrated on (Cole) a little bit,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “When teams clog up the lane like that it’s tough for him to get inside but he made some nice passes and we got to the line. It wasn’t pretty on offense but it was enough to get a win. If we can win with Cole scoring five points, we’ll do it. It’s better than losing. He’ll get his points and his big thing is that we win.”

The Hayfield defense did its job as it kept Goodhue out of the paint and forced the Wildcats to shoot a lot of 3-pointers.

“They were doing a lot of on the ball screens and we were able to help out on the back side and shut them down defensively,” Ducharme said.

The Vikings have started their season off with three wins after making it to state last season.

“We’re starting to click and get everybody involved,” Stuart said.
