Girls soccer: Packers and Winhawks play to a 1-1 tie

The Packers played some tough defense against Winona, but they couldn’t get the big goal they needed in a 1-1 tie with the Winhawks at Art Hass Stadium Thursday.

The Packers (4-4-1 overall, 1-3-1 Big Nine) tied the game at 1-1 with 13 minutes left in the first half when Hannah Voogd hammered in a 20-yard free kick.
“I think both teams played very hard. We battled and I appreciate that my girls never gave up from the beginning from the end,” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said. “Those girls are communicating well and they have confidence. I give credit to the whole team.”
Winona (2-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 Big Nine) opened the scoring when Carly Moran blasted a 20-yard shot into the top corner of the net in the 15th minute.
The Winhawks ran their offense through Moran the rest of the night, but the Packers focused on her and kept her out of her comfort zone.
“I think we knew coming into the game that she was a strong player,” Austin defender Sela Fadness said. “We knew we had to watch out for her. She’s tall, she can run fast and she has a good shot. Luckily we held her down after that first shot.”
The Packers fired off nine shots on goal, but they couldn’t get any point blank looks. Austin keeper Chloe Summerfield stopped 11 shots, but only a couple of them were close calls.
“I think if we would’ve started the game a little faster, we could’ve beat them,” Fadness said. “It’s too bad we only play them once this year, but a tie is better than a loss.”
