Stephanie Wagner is taking a trip down memory lane this spring and it’s probably going to benefit the Austin girls golf team.

Wagner, who golfed for the Packers from 2003-2006, is taking over as the new girls golf head coach and she’s hoping some of the experience she picked up while playing on four Big Nine champion teams will come in handy.

“I love golf,” Wagner said. “Your heart and your head need to be in it, and I think all of these girls (on the team) have that. I think that I possess that too and I like to portray that to my athletes.”

Wagner learned a lot about the game of golf under head coach Mark Anderson when she played for Austin and her dad coached golf at Kingsland High School. She’s been around coaching her whole life and she’s ready to try it for herself.

“I don’t always know what to say,” Wagner said. “I know I have a good eye and I know where to get them to where they need to be. I’m learning on the spot and these girls have been wonderful.”

One thing Wagner will have on her side is plenty of experience on Big Nine golf courses. She will have plenty of insight on how to play each hole and any advice she can offer would be a big lift for the Packers.

“I’ll be on a different side of the game,” Wagner said. “I come with a lot of background knowledge from when I played and the courses haven’t changed much. I’ll be able to tell them how to play a shot or when to use a driver.”

Wagner and the Packers are hoping to get outside on the course soon as they’ve been constrained to work out indoors so far.

“Unfortunately Minnesota’s weather system doesn’t allow golf to be a year round sport, but there’s places you can go hit,” she said. “I want to work with them in the summer and they need to be playing in the offseason.”

The Packers are scheduled to open their season at Byron April 13 at 2:30 p.m. Their home opener is scheduled for April 23 at Austin Country Club at 2:30 p.m.
