LYLE — The Lyle-Pacelli boys basketball team gave its fans a taste of what it is capable for much of the first half as it beat Randolph 80-64 in Lyle Monday.

The Athletics (5-4 overall) opened the game on a 33-7 run as David Diang, Skylar Meyer and Jordan Hart all started out on fire.

Diang finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists, and he said an early drive and dunk by Meyer got LP fired up.

“We had some defensive stops and we finished on offense,” Diang said. “Skylar’s dunk got us going.”

Meyer, who finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and three blocks, said the early run is exactly what LP should look like when things are going right.

“It’s how we should’ve been playing the whole year,” he said. “We finally started getting the flow going and it looks like we’re coming together. Hopefully we have a good streak coming.”

Unfortunately for LP, its momentum slowed down a little bit in the second half. After LP lead 45-24 at the break, the Rockets (5-7 overall) hit a flurry of threes in the second half to pull within 63-51 with 6:07 left.

“I thought we were very lazy starting out in the second half,” LP head coach Casey Anderson said. “It was like night and day from the first half. We were flat and tired, but a win’s a win and we need all of those we can get.”

LP distanced itself when Randolph was called for a personal foul and a technical foul on one possession and the Athletics hit three-of-four free throws to go up 66-51.

While the second half wasn’t ideal, Anderson was pleased with how his team came out to start the game.

“We came out ready to play tonight. It’s nice to see,” he said. “Hopefully they’re starting to believe and as a team they’re a lot better than as individuals.
