Daily Herald editorial

Over the course of 2012, more than 100 writers took the time to e-mail, type or write out by hand a letter to the editor of the Herald, commenting on one community issue or another. Those letters were a wonderful addition to the Herald’s Insight page.

From recommendations on candidates in last fall’s election to comments on business trends, local government and problems with pit bulls, letters to the editor provided a unique and often fascinating perspective on how Austin area residents view their community, state and nation. From the newspaper’s perspective, no contribution is more welcome than a letter of opinion. We recognize that for many people, putting their name to a publicly expressed opinion is difficult — especially here in Minnesota where we’re famous for being too nice to say what we think. It’s that discomfort with taking a stand that has led so many readers to offer their comments in the comfortable anonymity of the newspaper’s web site. So we appreciate those who are willing to stand up for their views.

Part of the Herald’s mission to inform and entertain readers in the Austin and Mower County area involves providing a public forum, a task which is considerably enlivened when readers choose to write in with their opinions. So our thanks to those who contributed.
