The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Quality Pork Processors have reached a settlement after the company contested three OSHA safety violations.

OSHA cited the Austin meatpacker after a routine inspection last April. OSHA alleged the violations put cleaning crews at risk of being exposed to hazardous materials. It also alleged workers weren’t properly disabling machines between uses, or before maintenance.

OSHA proposed nearly $12,000 in fines. Minnesota OSHA spokesman James Honerman said the agency often reduces penalties if the company agrees to fix the problem or improve employee training. OSHA’s report shows the penalty was reduced by nearly half.

According to OSHA’s website, the last time it filed a complaint with QPP was in 2008. QPP’s website claims its injury rates and workday incident rate are well below the meat industry average.

QPP is a private company which employs 1,300 people and processes 19,000 hogs per day, providing Hormel Foods Corp. with more than 50 percent of its pork, according to QPP’s website. It was founded in 1989.
