A local real estate broker is on his way to Austin City Council.

Jeremy Carolan, owner and operator of Carolan Homes, won against Lynn Spainhower 1,479-1,152 with about 56 percent of the votes Tuesday night for the council’s Ward 3. Both candidates filed as newcomers to the council race after Marian Clennon announced over the summer she would not run for reelection.

“I’m excited and looking forward to serving the citizens of Austin,” Carolan said.

During his run for office, Carolan said people in his ward brought up concerns about taxes and commercial property values. As he prepares to move into office, he will toward ways to focus on budgeting well and minimizing tax increases.

Also, the city should make it a goal to help facilitate the community betterment project Vision 2020, he said, though the city needs to weigh the benefits and costs to decide whether it should contribute money.

Carolan joins Ward 1’s newly-elected Michael Jordal as a newcomer to the council. While two new people with new ideas could affect the workings of the whole council, Carolan said he wasn’t sure whether that would be the case.

“It still takes seven votes from the council, but it may,” he said.

Carolan is an Austin native and has been a full-time real estate broker since 2003. He started Carolan Homes in 2008.
