Bruins, fans give back

Team donates to Salvation Army food shelf
The Austin Bruins are continuing to give back.
A can of mixed fruits sits on top of other food gathered during the Austin Bruins' game against Coulee Region Saturday night. The food, gathered through the CRC food drive, was donated to the Salvation Army.
The junior hockey team raised more than 1,000 pounds of food Saturday night for the Salvation Army, as about 150 of the 1,300 fans who showed up to see the Bruins beat the Coulee Region Chill 4-1 donated to the local food shelf. The Bruins paired with Cooperative Response Center for the event.
“This was a great partnership that we had and we’re looking forward to working with them again,” Bruins account executive Stephanie Bowe said. “Working with the Salvation Army, we’ve realized there is a need for food in the area, and it’s great for our fans to contribute and give to those families in need in Austin.”
The Salvation Army’s Lt. David Amick said donations usually increase during the Christmas season, but by January, sometimes that dwindles a little bit.
“It’s nice to see the Bruins, the CRC and the community are willing to step up and realize that the need knows no season,” Amick said.
The Austin Bruins hockey team, which was founded in 2010, has been active in the community, most notably raising $22,000 in 2010 and $39,000 this year during its annual “Paint the Rink Pink” event which benefits The Hormel Institute’s cancer research.
