There was good news and bad news for the Southland boys basketball team at Saint Charles Thursday.

The good news was junior Mike Goergen scored his 1,000th career point, but the bad news was the Rebels lost 67-54 to Saint Charles (11-4 overall, 7-4 Three Rivers).

Goergen, a forward who led Southland in scoring as a sophomore, scored 16 of his 25 points in the first half and he set the milestone early in the second half.

“There’s only been a handful of athletes since the merger in 1974 at Southland that have had the abilities Mike has,” Southland head coach Jon Thalberg said. “You could tell at an early age that he had that ‘it’ factor and he’s gotten better every year.”

The Rebels (9-6 overall, 6-5 Three Rivers) couldn’t contain Saint Charles’ offense in the loss.

“We were a couple of steps slow and they were hitting all of their shots,” Thalberg said.
