HAYFIELD — The Stewartville girls basketball team found its outside shot at the right time to knock off Hayfield 57-44 Friday night.

Right after Jordyn Krekling hit two free throws to pull the Vikings within 38-35 with 7:55 left in the game, the Tigers (13-3 overall) had an answer. Stewartville’s Julie Rainey hit a three, Kiley Severson scored for Hayfield and Rio Hack hit another Stewartville three to make it 44-37 with 6:18 left.

“We had just clawed to get back in it and that was a big part of the game right there,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said.

The Vikings (15-2 overall) never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Hayfield had led 31-27 after the Vikings rallied for a 13-0 run that saw Kiley Severson take control inside. Severson, who finished 22 points and six rebounds, and Krekling, who scored 13 points, combined for all 26 of Hayfield’s second half points.

The Tigers scored 34 points in the second half and their 57 points is the most Hayfield allowed has allowed this season.

“We can’t give up 57 points and expect to win,” Kindschy said. “The defense let us down and we didn’t have a lot of offense besides Jordyn and Kiley. We need someone else to step up.”

Stewartville knocked down seven threes as its outside game complimented its inside attack.

“They’re a very good ball club,” Kindschy said. “They penetrate well and they kick and pass well. All of the sudden you’re out of position and they nail threes.”

Hayfield tied the game at 18 with 2:17 left in the first half when Renee Stier drove for a hoop, but the Tigers scored the last five points of the first half and they opened the second half by scoring four straight to go up 27-18.

Kayla Garness had two points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals for Hayfield and Stier had seven points and three assists.

Junior guard Shawnna Sperber led Stewartville with 18 points.
