The Hayfield Heat opened their first ever Class ‘C’ state amateur baseball tournament with a boom as they pulled off an upset when they knocked off Hanksa 2-1 in Glencoe Sunday.

Hayfield’s Weston Hansen pitched another gem as he struck out 11 and allowed just one run in innings of work on the mound.

“This game was considered the biggest upset thus far at the C State Tournament as Hanska was a Class B team last year, and got second in the State C tournament two years ago,” Hayfield manager Kasey Krekling said.

The game was scoreless through seven innings when the Heat (17-11 overall) finally got on the board in the top of the eighth.

Tyler Nelson singled and Shawn Palmer bunted for a single to set up a sacrifice fly by Craig Selk that made it 1-0. The Heat took a 2-0 lead when Tyler Krekling blooped a shot over the second baseman to score a run on a fielder’s choice.

The Lakers scored a run in the ninth on a bloop single, but Hanson ended the game by forcing a groundout.

Hayfield now advances to the final 16 and will play another single elimination game against Miltona on Saturday in Glencoe at 5 p.m.
