HAYFIELD — A Hayfield senior had to face some good news and bad news this year.

The bad news for Kiley Severson is that a significant knee injury is keeping her from getting to the Class ‘A’ state track and field meet for the third straight year; the good news is she’ll get a chance at redemption when she competes forNorth Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. at the college level.

Severson has received a partial track and field scholarship from the Bison and after red-shirting during the indoor season due to injury rehabilitation, she hopes to be throwing shot put and discus as early as next spring.

“Being injured, I’ll be very motivated after surgery to recover and show my potential,” Severson said. “When I go there, I’m going to do all that I can to be extra strong.”

Severson took fifth in the Class ‘A’ state shot put her sophomore year and was third in shot put at state last season.

Severson was also a 1,000-point scorer for the Hayfield girls basketball team and she was recruited by some smaller schools for track and basketball. However, she didn’t want two sports to get in the way of her studies as she plans to go into nursing.

“It was hard,” she said of choosing which sport to play. “There was an option to do both, but I took track because I loved the facilities at NDSU and they gave me that offer. I couldn’t really turn it down.”

Severson is excited to compete in the Fargodome, which holds over 19,000 fans, and she’s looking forward to attending NDSU, which had an enrollment of over 14,000 students in 2009, according to its Web Site.

“I’ve been in a small town for my whole life, and it should be a good opportunity for me to experience a bigger town,” she said.
