Thumbs up for filing. An impressive number of people have stepped up to run for public office this year, including some from diverse backgrounds. It’s nice to see that, for whatever reason prompted them, so many stand up and want to serve their community and county through civic service.

Thumbs up for recognition. Though it took 80 years, we’re thrilled to see Clayton Houff receive all the recognitions he was due for his service in World War II, where he gave his life tending to injured men from an explosion. He was recognized at the time through the Marine Corps unit he was serving with, but several medals and ribbons were finally put in the care of family members recently. It’s important that we continue to remember the sacrifices that many gave in order to maintain a better, a better world.

Thumbs up for grant funding. With the massive one-way project on Oakland Avenue and First Avenue NW looming next year, the city was able to secure three more grants that will go toward the project in various areas. The more grants that Austin can secure, the less the city will have to put toward the project and that’s always a good thing.

Thumbs up to supporting youth. After 20 years working in the Austin Public Schools District, well-known and loved success coach Laura Ramirez stands as another example of the good these people in providing bridges between those of diverse backgrounds and the community into which they move. Ramirez was one of the originals and her dedication stretches outside of the district in the community at large. We urge any and all to follow her example in taking part in this vital need.

Thumbs up to Lyle-Pacelli baseball. Congratulations to Lyle-Pacelli baseball for again winning the Section 1A baseball title and representing our area in the Minnesota State Class A Baseball Tournament this coming week.
