This weekend, Austin High School Theater is staging their third production since returning to the stage last year. After staging “Sally Cotter” in spring 2023 and “High School Musical” in the fall, this spring’s production ventures into quirky murder mystery territory with “The Alibis.”

“The Alibis” is a series of vignettes written by eight authors (we are doing 7 of them). Each suspect has an interrogation with Detective Casey Neptune before they relinquish their alibi by “recreating the scene” when the curtains open.  This journey has some sweet and funny moments in addition to some awkward alibis. There’s even a big twist at the end that no one will see coming.

Each cast of characters is somehow connected to J. Leslie Arlington, an eccentric billionaire. Supported by Arlington’s trusty butler Warwick, Casey Neptune tries to unweave the web of events from the evening of the billionaire’s birthday party, which was also the evening of his death.

With scenes like Attempted Theft of a Confection of a Minor, Davina Arlington wants revenge, Hamster Murder, Mill Noir, Badger, In Case of Fish and the Incredible Season Finale, you don’t want to miss how these all are tangled together.

Performances of “The Alibis” are today at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. All performances are in Ellis Middle School Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth, and concessions are available (cash only).

The cast has worked hard on this show for months while juggling speech, sports, music, academic clubs, work, and school. Our theater program has developed into something like an extended family, with students who support one another and have each other’s backs. I am proud to say I continue to hear that these students feel heard, safe, and supported when they come to drama.
