Austin’s Winkels takes fourth, GMLOS’s Smith finishes second at state wrestling meet

Three area wrestlers advanced all the way to the final day at the Minnesota State Wrestling Meet in Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Saturday.
Austin junior Sam Winkels won three straight matches at 285-pounds in Class AA to get to the third place match, where he lost to Brady Rhode of Granite Falls 5-0 to finish in fourth place. Winkels beat Evan Thompson of New Ulm Area 6-2, he topped Ian Larrabee 9-1 on a major decision and he beat Clayton Danielson of Grand Rapids 10-4.
Winkels was pinned by Rhode in the quarterfinals.
Winkels finishes with a record of 49-3 overall.
Westfield junior Bo Zweiner finished in fifth place at 133-pounds in Class A after he beat David Schuh of Tracy. Zweiner finishes with a record of 39-8 overall.
In the girls meet, GMLOS senior Diann Smith finished in second place for the third straight year when she was pinned by Cassandra Gonzales of Apple Valley in the title match.
Smith finishes with a record of 30-5 overall.
