ADAMS – The Southland girls basketball team made a big second half run to get back in the game, but the Rebels ultimately ran out of time as they lost to Houston 76-61 Thursday.

Southland sophomore Juliette Matheis scored on a put-back to bring the Rebels within 53-51 with 8:46 left in the game after the Hurricanes had built up a nine-point lead earlier in the second half. Houston was able to respond as it outscored Southland 23-10 over the final eight minutes.

Matheis finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Rebels (1-2 overall) and sophomore Breeley Galley chipped in 16 points.

“As a whole team, we’re growing,” Southland head coach Matt Webber said. “Juliette stepped up nicely and so did Breeley. We’ve got to have girls step up because we’re really young. This was only our third game and now we’re going to play a bunch of games in a few days. We’ll be ready.

The Hurricanes (4-4 overall) shared the wealth and they were led by Avery Kingsley, who scored 26 points and Aubry Boldt, who put up 18 points.

“Give them all of the credit in the world,” Webber said. “The way they executed, they were one step ahead of us. Every time we made a stop or a run, they always had an answer.”

Southland opened the game on a 9-2 run as Matheis, Galle and Maren Wehrenberg all hit early three-pointers. Houston took its first lead when Olivia Yohe hit a three to make it 19-17.
