One man was taken into custody after a report of a shot fired during a domestic situation Sunday night.
According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, the Austin Police Department, Mower County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol responded to a domestic disturbance at about 8:46 p.m. on Sunday in the 1800 block of Fourth Avenue Northwest. The reporting party told dispatch a gun had been fired during the incident.
When officers arrived on scene, several witnesses directed them towards two men who were actively fighting inside the home. A witness also turned over a .380 pistol.
The two men were completely covered in blood and the officers struggled to pull them apart and end the fight. Once that had occurred, Mayo Ambulance was able to safety approach the scene and began treatment.
McKichan said it is believed a single shot was fired from the .380 – the bullet did not strike anyone, but rather struck a door frame. The wounds and bleeding were believed to have been caused by one party allergy stabbing the other, combined with the possibility that a broken beer bottle was either used in the fight or was rolled over repeatedly as the men wrestled.
The two men were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin for treatment. One of them, Raul Zavala, 27, of Austin was taken into custody, though no formal charges have been made.
