Law enforcement is warning residents to be on the lookout for unsolicited emails after a Brownsdale resident fell victim to an email scam.
According to Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik, the victim reported being contacted via email by someone claiming to be from a foreign country. The victim was told if they provided the scammer with personal information and $375 to purchase insurance, they would then have $5.5 million transferred into their bank account.
The victim did send money and shared personal information with the scammer.
“People are urged to never share personal information over email or the phone with people who contact them unsolicited,” Sandvik said.
