The No. 4 seeded Hayfield girls basketball team survived a slow start as it beat No. 13 Schaeffer Academy (7-20 overall) 56-30 in a Section 1A Tournament opener in Hayfield Thursday.
Hayfield (15-11 overall) never trailed, but it did go on a nine minute scoring slump after taking a 5-2 lead early on.
The Vikings got things going in the second half as eighth grader Kristen Watson led the way with 16 points and 11 steals.
“It was a good second half by our girls,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “Hopefully we can carry it over to Monday.”
Hayfield will play either No. 5 Kingsland or No. 12 Lyle-Pacelli in Rochester Century at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
