Best Bets: A weekend of the arts

Published 7:01 am Thursday, February 27, 2020

This weekend and the following Monday will give music, theatre and book lovers opportunities to get out of the house.

The ArtWorks Open Jam Session returns this month at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at the Austin ArtWorks Center. This event gives musicians and songwriters the chance to meet and play with other musicians from around the area. The house band will set up and will be available for back-up; you bring your music, instruments, and energy.

A cash bar will be available.

Need some more music? The Austin Public Library will feature a unique concert by Tuvan throat singers Alash at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2.

Tuvan throat music is a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. The musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating a unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their musical heritage.

Admission for the performance is free.

Sweet Reads will host another author meet, this time featuring Ray Frigard, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Frigard is an inventor, owner of award-winning toy patents, creative problem-solving teacher, and author of the Opus series about musicians in New York City during the 80s.

Don’t forget to see Riverland Community College Theatre’s production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. Filled with witty Victorian aphorisms and Wilde’s own brand of wisdom, “The Importance of Being Earnest” remains one of theatre’s most popular comedies.

Some material may not be suitable for young children.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. All performances are at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland Community College.
