Viking girls hit rough waters in opener

HAYFIELD — The Hayfield girls basketball team suffered from some growing pains as it dropped its season opener 60-47 to Fillmore Central (1-0 overall) in Hayfield Friday.

The Vikings (0-1 overall) committed as many turnovers as the number of points they scored in the first half at 18 apiece as their young players were a little overwhelmed to start the night.

“It was a big crowd tonight for a lot of players’ first game,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We’re inexperienced. Rachel Pack started last year and Cela Carney played a little bit off the bench. Everyone else was playing their first varsity minutes and it looked like it.”
