Lawrence “Larry” Allen Wood, 85

Lawrence “Larry” Allen Wood, 85, of Hayfield, Minnesota, and formerly of Sargeant, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary’s Campus-Rochester.

Larry was born on Oct. 2, 1934, the son of Earl and Alma (Seltz) Wood in Missoula, Montana. After his mother’s death in 1935, he was raised by Lena and Louis Grochow on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Larry was united in marriage to Ruth Jensen on Dec. 29, 1960, at Evanger Lutheran Church. Larry was a member of Evanger Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, and church custodian. He served as council member and mayor in Sargeant for many years. Larry served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Reserve. He was proud of his service to the country and served in Korea after the Korean War. Returning from the service, he drove ambulances in San Francisco, California. His main occupations were driving trucks for Robert’s Foods and working in the turkey barns for Larson Products. He loved to garden, play with his dogs, do crossword puzzles, word find puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, but never did the same puzzle twice.

Larry is survived by his children, Heidi (Cary) Goemann, Wells, Minnesota, Greg (Bobbie Jean Rollie) Wood, Pine Island, Minnesota, and Sonja (James) Posey, Kasson, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Aaron, Hannah (special friend, Calvin Cicha), Garrit (Rachel), Raelyn, Braxdon and Maren; a soon to be great-grandson; sister, Delores (Walter) Gookstetter; niece and nephew, Cynthia, Duane and families; cousin, Lloyde Anderson; and cousin-in-law, Kathy Anderson and families. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; two infant sons, Steven and Douglas; brother, Earl Wood, Jr.; aunt, Lena; uncle Louie Grochow; and special cousins, Carlton Anderson, Iver Anderson and Ilyne Jennings.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at Evanger Lutheran Church, 33554 660th Ave. in rural Sargeant, with the Rev. Dwight DoBell officiating. Visitation will be 5–7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 501 Second St. NW in Hayfield, and for one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Inurnment will be in Evanger Lutheran Cemetery in rural Sargeant with military honors by Hayfield American Legion Post 330.
