Police issue reminder about scam calls

Law enforcement is reminding people to be on the lookout for scam calls due to an increase in reports of scam calls from citizens.
Austin Police Chief David McKichan advises the following:
• Do not give out any personal information over the phone.
• No legitimate organization will ask for gift cards or money cards as forms of payment. This is a common tactic for scammers.
• If you receive a call about winning a contest you did not enter, then you have not won anything. Scammers typically claim the victim has won, then say there is a fee they need to pay in order to release the winnings.
• If you have any concerns about possibly having been contacted by a scammer, call law enforcement.
