Police: ‘Obey school safety patrol, crossing guards’
The Austin Police Department is reminding drivers near schools to obey crossing guards and student safety patrols at local schools after receiving complaints from principals.
According to APD Chief David McKichan, the School Resource Officer (SRO) has received reports of drivers not stopping for student safety patrol stop signs while driving through school zones. Drivers have also reportedly ignored stop signs held by adult crossing guards.
McKichan said that crossing guards and school-related safety patrols are allowed to direct traffic so as to allow for safe street crossing in school zones. Motorists are required by law to stop for their stop signs as they would any other stop sign.
