Best Bets: Summerfest kicks off in LeRoy

LeRoy’s annual Summerfest celebration will be held July 19-21 with a full slate of events packed into each day.

• Tween Advisory Committee, 11 a.m. at the Austin Public Library. For youth in grades 4 to 7 – here’s the chance to help decide on activities, events, and programs that interest you. For more information, call 507-433-2391.

• Soup and Salad Bar, 4:30 p.m. at the Mower County Senior Center. Come early if you want to play Bingo. Enjoy a full salad bar with all sorts of goodies – lettuce with all the toppings and at least 2 other salads and breads. Small bowl, one trip – $2, salad plate, one trip – $4, or all you can eat for $8 (clean plate every time, soup included with “all you can eat” option). For more information, call 507-433-2370.

• Chateau Speedway – Points Night, 7  p.m. at Chateau Speedway. First green flag at 7:15 pm, with USRA A Mod, USRA B Mod, WISSOTA Midwest Mod, WISSOTA Street Stock, Hobby Stock, Hornet, Mini Mod.   Admission $10 for adults, $5 for pre-teens, free for under 5.  For more information, call 507-440-8238.

• Jammin’ at the Bandshell, 7 p.m. at Bandshell Community Park. A family-friendly musical event for musicians and music-lovers alike, open to all levels of musicianship, so bring your instrument (voice, guitar, bass, accordion, flute, trumpet, tambourine, violin, etc.) and join the house band Ventura Highway and other local musicians on stage at the band shell in Austin. You can choose a well-known, easy-to-follow song or bring chord charts for the band (at least four copies). Bring lawn chairs, blankets, coolers with treats, beverages, sunblock, etc. No food or beverages will be sold on the premises. Free event, but a free will offering will be collected to help with production costs. Not an Austin Area Arts program, but hosted by a partner of Austin Area Arts. • Observing at the Fairgrounds, 10 p.m. to midnight at the Mower County Fairgrounds. For astronomy enthusiasts. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing by observing the night sky. Observing will begin at 10 a.m. with a viewing of Jupiter and Saturn, then a viewing of the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility, where Apollo 11 landed. If you have a telescope, bring it with you as this is an opportunity to get it pointed at the night sky. Enter the fairgrounds at the main gate off 12th Street Southwest and head halfway down the midway to the parking lot on the left. Come out and join our gathering of enthusiasts even if you don’t have a telescope. If cloudy, the event will be rescheduled for 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. • Atlantis Swimming Federation MRC Championship Meet, at the Austin Municipal Pool. The pool will be closed to open swimming during the meet. The splash pool will be available to the public. For more information, call 507-433-1881.

Saturday

• Annual Austin American Legion Classic Car Show, noon to 4 p.m. at American Legion Post 91. Open to the public. Registration from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; show starts at noon. Entry fee $10, $5 for each additional car. First 75 cars registered receive Dash Plaques. Sloppy Joes and chili dogs, nachos, silent auction, craft sale, games, bake sale, 50s and 60s music and more.
