Now that school is out, police are reminding kids and parents about curfews in effect throughout Austin.

According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, city ordinance prohibits unaccompanied minors under the age of 16 from being in public areas, including parks and on the streets, between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. Minors aged 16-17 are not allowed to be in public areas between midnight and 5 a.m.

The city’s curfew ordinance does not apply to minors accompanied by a parent or guardian, working at a place of business, traveling through the city, traveling to or from a school function, or in an emergency situation, McKichan said.
