A 13-year-old Austin male is facing possible charges after allegedly tampering with vehicles and stealing items Sunday morning.

According to Austin Police Capt. Todd Clennon, an officer was on patrol at about 4:06 a.m. on Sunday in the 1000 block of 11th Street Northwest when he noticed a white Lincoln with its dome lights on. After checking out the area, the officer went to the corner of 14th Street and Eighth Avenue Northwest, where he encountered a bicyclist who asked if the officer had received a report of car prowling. The officer said no and the bicyclist said he observed two juveniles wearing all black opening and closing car doors, including the white Lincoln.

The officer searched the area and spotted the two subjects in the 1300 block of 12th Street Northwest, Clennon said. The officer then parked on 13th Avenue Northwest and observed the subjects rummaging through cars.

As they approached his location, the officer turned on his flashlight and identified himself, catching one of the subjects, a 13-year-old male. The other subject ran away.

The officer searched the juvenile and found the key to the Lincoln, several dollars, a cell phone and miscellaneous items, Clennon said. The juvenile was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility. He is facing possible charges of tampering with a motor vehicle, theft and violating curfew.
