The Packers trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but they battled to get within 6-5 after Teyghan Hovland hammered a two-run homer to left field in the sixth. STA (20-9 overall) put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Austin, which finished the day in third place in Class AAA, finishes its run as the first team to go to the state baseball tournament since 1990.

“I feel like we’re the team that finally finished the mission to get here. We didn’t get the ultimate goal, but we got our first goal, which was the section title,” Austin senior AJ Mueller said. “We were the guys that were finally able to do that because we’d been knocking on the door for so many years. I think we’re going to be remembered as the guys who actually did it.”
