Rockets use big third inning to beat LP

With the postseason just a week away, the Lyle-Pacelli baseball team is trying to find its footing.

The Athletics (10-7 overall) dropped their fifth game in their last seven contests as they fell to Randolph 11-3 in Marcusen Park Monday.

LP lead 1-0 after Tanner Murphy doubled in a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Rockets had a big answer with a six-run third inning. Dan Ehleringer launched a three-run homer with one out in that frame to put the Rockets (14-1 overall) up 4-1.

LP finished the game with five hits and the team committed three errors.

“We can’t fall into a lull. We’ve got to start picking each other up,” LP head coach Brock Meyer said. “Our body language is bad right now and we’ve got to start playing for each other. Right now it’s been one or two bad innings each game and it’s all been mental. It’s not happening right now and it’s frustrating.”

While the Athletics have struggled against the top teams in the area this spring, Meyer said his team is very capable to make a run if it can get things rolling before the Section 1A West Tournament begins on May 22.

“I would put this team up against anybody in Class A and probably a lot of teams in Class AA,” Meyer said. “But we’ve got to play every game from start to finish.”
