Dorothy C. May, 99

Dorothy C. May, 99, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Adams Health Care Center.

She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Johnsburg, Minnesota, to Henry and Theresia Smith. She grew up on a farm and attended school in Johnsburg.  In her early years, she worked in homes for mothers with newborns, worked as a housekeeper, and then worked at the Hormel plant. She was united in marriage to Fred May on Oct. 4, 1944, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Johnsburg. In March 1945, they moved to their farm in the Rose Creek, Minnesota, area. They had three sons, whom they raised on the farm. In the fall of 1980, they retired, sold the farm to their son, Bryan, and moved to Rose Creek.

Dorothy always wanted to make sure everyone had plenty to eat. She kept a large garden and did lots of canning and freezing. After they moved to Rose Creek, she started another garden and maintained that until she was about 85. She loved the outdoors and doing yard work. She enjoyed painting and helping her sisters. She could do almost anything and baked many pies, with raisin being the best. She was not afraid to tackle any project and liked to refinish furniture.  She also took care of her newborn niece, Lisa, for several months, while Lisa’s mother had surgery. She liked to make chicken soup on Sundays. She was active at St. Peters parish and would be one of the first to help with a project, including cleaning the church. You would always see her as a leader at the church, doing the work that was needed. She liked to crochet and belonged to a crocheting group, which she enjoyed. She made afghans for most of her grandchildren. She loved her family and grandchildren.
