Richard Allen Schumacher, 85

Richard was born on March 12, 1934, in Austin, the son of Lawrence and Mathilda (Kerling) Schumacher. He grew up in Austin and attended St. Columbus Catholic School, graduating in 1952. Following high school, Richard enlisted into the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 19, 1952, serving four years in active duty and six years as a reservist. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 18, 1956. On Nov. 3, 1956, Richard was united in marriage to Ruth Stroh in Bonner, Montana. After their marriage they made their home in Helena, Montana, where Richard worked in the court house. The couple then moved to Missoula, Montana, where he graded lumber. In the 1960s, Richard and Ruth took up residence in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked for a casting company. Later they moved to Austin, where Richard worked at the veteran’s service office and finished his career at Hormel. Richard served on St. Mary’s church board. Known as the “candy man” at St. Mary’s, he provided the kids candy and rolls for the adults every Sunday. He was a life member of VFW Post 1216, serving as its commander, American Legion Post 91, and the DAV. Richard “loved” the lottery and enjoyed baseball; he played semi-pro in his younger years. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
