RCC’s historic run comes to an end

The Riverland Community College men’s basketball team came up one game short of the National Tournament after it lost the Region 13 championship game to Central Lakes (22-5 overall) 88-81 in Anoka Sunday.

The Blue Devils (24-6 overall) trailed 48-31 at halftime and weren’t able to get back into the game. Freshman Terrell Smith had 24 points, eight assists and three steals for RCC as he knocked down six three-pointers.

RCC beat Anoka-Ramsey 82-62 in the Region 13 semifinals on Saturday.

The sophomore class for RCC compiled 43 wins over the last two years and the team won its first conference championship since 1973.
