Last chance to see MN Black Fine Arts Show

This weekend marks the last chance to see the MN Black Fine Arts Show at the Austin ArtWorks Center.

This traveling show, the first of its kind in the state, will be on display through Saturday, March 23. From here, it will travel to Duluth.

Presented in partnership with Obsidian Arts and funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board, the show features Minnesota artists who identify as Black, African or African American. Artists featured include:

• Carla Hamilton, a mixed media artist and native and current resident of Duluth;

• Christopher E. Harrison, a painter based in Minneapolis;

• Bill Jeter, a multimedia artist and 34-year Minnesota resident;

•Antwon Key, photographer and graphic designer based in Eagle Lake and Mankato;

• Terresa Moses, a painter and graphic designer based in Duluth;

• Theoneste Munyemana, an abstract painter who lives and works in the Twin Cities;

• Ivy Vainio, a photographer who lives and works in Duluth; and

• Carl Wesley, a mixed media artist living in Minneapolis.

Skating opportunities at Riverside Arena

The snow may be melting and Spring Break may be wrapping up, but you can still take advantage of ice skating and youth hockey lessons at Riverside Arena this weekend. Cost is $6 for stick time and $4 for public skate, plus $1 to rent skates.

  • Stick Time – 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22
  • Public Skate – 5:45-7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22
  • Public Skate – 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23

Friday

• ArtRocks Open Jam Session, 7-9:30 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. Meet and play with other musicians from around the area. House band sets up and is available for back-up, you bring your music, instruments, and energy.  Cash bar available. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

Saturday

• Book Art for All Ages – Origami, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Austin Public Library. Monthly craft activity in the Programming Room. For more information, call 507-433-2391.

• Kids’ Studio – Clay Polymer Animal Charms, 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Austin ArtWorks Center. With Nicole Weiss. For kids ages 4 to 14; cost $5. For more information or to register, call 507-434-0934.

• Tech Tutor Time, 1-2 p.m. at the Austin Public Library. Basic one-on-one computer tutoring provided for such things as setting up and using email, using web browsers, working in Google Docs or MS Word, searching the library’s collection, downloading eBooks, and assisting with projects in progress. Not able to deal with viruses, fix hardware issues or do intensive troubleshooting. Bring your own device or use one of the library’s desktops. For more information, call 507-433-2391.

Sunday

• All You Can Eat Pancakes, 9 a.m. to noon at American Legion Post 91. Breakfast includes eggs, sausage, orange juice or milk, and endless pancakes. Tickets $8 at the door. Proceeds go to help veterans in need. For more information, call 507-437-1151.
