Sawyer Weiss became the newest Mower County deputy after being sworn-in on Thursday morning at the Mower County Law Enforcement Center.

Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik issued the oath.

“I’ve been working with the city of Grand Meadow and I wanted to be a police officer,” Weiss said. “I grew up with my dad being in the Rochester Police Department and I wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

Weiss’ father, Bill, who recently retired after 30 years with the Rochester Police Department, was among the family members present at the ceremony. Weiss requested that his father be the one to pin his badge on his chest.

Weiss described his swearing-in as a “big deal” for his family.

“It’s a very sentimental time for all of us,” he said. “Thirty years of (Bill) working in the streets of Rochester and me following in his footsteps, it means a lot to us as a family.”

Weiss said that he is eager to begin work with the Mower County Sheriff’s Office.

“I’m definitely excited to start this journey,” he said. “Just getting out there to help the people in the great community of Mower County and the city of Austin and helping out the best I can.”
