What will you create?

Austin Area Arts is offering a variety of great art classes for adults and children this spring. Treat yourself to a couple of hours of right-brain thinking and fun. Find out more and register on our web site at austinareaarts.org.

Kolrosing: An ancient Norwegian art form is offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12. Kolrosing is an old Scandinavian tradition dating back to Viking times and was most often used to decorate objects such as spoons, small bowls, boxes and cups. A specially designed knife is used to cut fine lines into wood, then dye is used to enhance the design.

Oil Painting Portraits: This class is offered at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28 with instructor Katie Hunerdosse. Learn some of the basics of painting with oils, while also covering some of the techniques of painting skin tones, hair, and eyes. No experience required, but a basic knowledge of painting or drawing is recommended. Ages 17 and over.

No Press? No Problem: Gelatin printmaking is offered at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and have some fun learning the virtues and the fluidity of making monotype prints on gelatin plates. Multidisciplinary artist Lori Biwer-Stewart will teach you the basics of printmaking without the use of a printing press. No previous printmaking experience necessary. Ages 15 and over.

Basic Wheel Throwing (Clay): This class is offered at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11. Instructor John Sullivan will walk you through the basics of sculpting with clay on the wheel and teach you how to make your own pottery. Return for a session to glaze the clay pieces on April 25. Ages 18 and over. This class is sold out. You may add your name to the waiting list on the website.

Needle Felting: Daisies is offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. Discover one of the trendiest techniques in fiber arts by learning how to needle felt a daisy flower from wool roving. Enjoy the daisy in a vase or create a hair clip. Recommended age 13 and over. Class not recommended for anyone who is on blood thinners, immunocompromised or diabetic due to working with felting needles. 

Watercolor Botanicals: An introductory class is offered on at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. Instructor Melinda Wolff returns to the ArtWorks Center to teach her creative, trendy take on watercolor. You may be familiar with Melinda’s stained glass work or wood jewelry in the ArtWorks retail area.

Learn Your Camera: Photography Basics is offered at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, with instructor Hannah Rosholt. After instruction, the class will go outdoors to shoot photos. Rain date will be May 8, 2019.

Hands-on Kolam Workshop: This workshop will be with Ragamala Dance at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Each day before sunrise in southeastern India, millions of women create Kolams — intricate designs made of rice flour on the ground in front of the main entrances to their homes. This daily ritual creates a sacred space and becomes a link between the intimate home and the vastness of the outside world. Ages 10 and over. This class will take place outdoors if weather allows.

$5 Kids Studio classes: Offered every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Spring projects include watercolor mosaics, garden signs, polymer clay animals, canvas painting, Easter mobile. Register on the website. Many sessions sell out, so don’t wait.

Stop by the ArtWorks Center on the second Saturday of the month for Family Art Studio. It’s a time for families to get creative with materials provided. This is free and open to all ages encouraged to attend and create together. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required. Funded by the Austin Area Foundation.
